Kings & Queens of France had decorative bird cages gilded of gold and silver, filled with birds of enamel and precious metals, set with the finest gems. By the Victorian era, the bird was considered even more than a pet, and the decorative cage was seen as an important ornamentation within any Victorian parlor. Ornate birdcages were popular elements in Chinoiserie design and art, as painters often hid symbols in there work, in which a birdcage was common. The birdcage is a luminous symbol of the Golden Ages, but especially of the Belle Époque, Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
