Hair slides, combs, and pins, were especially popular in the 1920s through the 1950s, as short or long waves were adorned with delicate designs, decorated with stones and embellishments to illuminate the locks. Insects of all sorts appeared in fashions of the 1940s & 1950s, as a theme of surrealism and novelty. In 1938, Elsa Schiaparelli's Pagan collection featured insects in the form of motifs and embroidery, and in 1951, Christian Dior created a white gown, embroidered with dragonflies. The timeless trend remains strong, as recent runways have featured hairpieces to adorn the ensembles, of butterflies, dragonflies, and more.
